Sri Annapurna has been serving guests in Varanasi since the year 2000. They have a full range of vegetarian dishes at their air-conditioned restaurant in Ramkatora. Sri Annapurna serves a good variety of South Indian & North Indian dishes. At Sri Annapurna more than 30 varieties of Dosas are available like Masala dosa,Mysore masala dosa(spicy), Malabar dosa, Uduppi fried Idli to name a few.
In the North Indian food Paneer butter Masala is quite popular with Butter Nan and Yellow lentils or order a Annapurna Special Thali for a wider choice of Indian food on one platter.
Hyderabadi Kurkure, Crispy babycorn are really popular as starters.
Apart from the South Indian & North Indian food, Chinese, Continental and some baked dishes are also served.

Their three sweet shops are located at Ramkatora, Mahmoorganj, and Bhelupur. The sweet shops specialize in Bengali, Rajasthani & Dry fruits sweets. These type of sweets are only available at the three Sri Annapurna outlets. The restaurant also delivers thalis to trains at the Varanasi Junction and at Mughalsarai. All you must do is call two hours before the train leaves the station with the passenger name, train name, train number, coach number and birth number and the thali will be there on time. There is no delivery charge for this service. Sri Annapurna also does outdoor catering and has a 5,000 square feet banquet hall to take care of all kinds of events.

Ksheer Sagar is famous for sweets. They have now opened an outlet in Sigra. The below information applies as well to the Sigra location as all the sweets are made at one location.

Ksheer Sagar means "Ocean of Milk" and is taken from this snippet of the Ramayana,

"O Lord, reclining in the Ocean of Milk! O Rama! Should you keep me immersed in sorrow? Did you not rush to the succor to elephant king Gajendra? I have heard of how you protected the honor of Draupadi by supplying clothes. I have also heard that you were responsible for the release of Bhakta Ramadaasa from incarceration. For the sake of lotus-eyed Sita, you crossed the ocean, earned fame for yourself. One who possess Taaraka as name! Lord! Deign to accept and grace me."

If you have lived any time in India, you will know that milk is one of the base ingredients for sweets made here.  In fact, milk is one of the main ingredients in curd yogurt and As the business card states, "taste & profession is our passion." That is certainly true at Ksheer Sagar located on the Godowlia - Assi road in Sonarpura. It is one of the best places to buy sweets in Varanasi. They recently remodeled the shop to include a spacious glass enclosed interior.  I like to get the yogurt poured into unfired clay bowls.  They come in two sizes and two tastes--a normal sweetened yogurt and a pistachio sweetened yogurt.  Of course you can also get all the main Indian sweets at Ksheer Sagar such as gulab jamun, jalebi and assorted barf. Drop on by some time and you'll notice that the shop remains crowded--proof that what's written on the card is what is really offered!

Sri Rajbandhu is one of the oldest functioning sweet shops in Varanasi.  It's located right near Chowk.  There are a lot of armed police around the shop because it is situated at one of the access lanes points to the Vishwanath temple. Don't let that discourage you though from coming and sampling the sweets.

The word "pelvan" means "wrestler" in Hindi.  Everybody knows Pelvan's for it's famous sweet milk and lassi drinks (hot sweet milk available after 7pm each night).  You'll find lots of people standing here any night of the week eating gulab jamun or a sweet "sandwich."  Lassi is also available and can be drank in either small or big clay cups.  Give this place a shot for hot sweet milk especially in the winter.  In the summer you should stick to a large cool Lassi.
